How to Paint Clouds for Non-Artists!

DIY in Real Life: How To Paint Clouds for Non-Artists!

So…. I’m not an artist.

Not by a long shot…

A very VERY long shot….

I mean we’re talking best sniper in the military LOOOOOOOONG shot.

Yes, I love to paint flat surfaces… But I like to paint them all one color.  Maybe two or three with the help of tape for lines.

I don’t do artist-y things.  Ever.

Creative? Yes, perhaps.

Artist-y? No.

So when my friend (the-overly-confident-in-my-artsy-abilities-Angela) said she would love clouds on the upper walls and ceiling… I freaked out.  Inwardly.

I’m sure that my confident bluffing as I said, “Sure!  Why not!  Let’s try it! WHAT’S THE WORST THAT CAN HAPPEN??!” totally fooled her! 😉

So I did what any normal person in this situation would do.

I looked it up on YouTube and Pinterest.  (My heroes!)

These are some of the inspiration photos I looked at on Pinterest:

clouds1

{Pinterest}

This one came with a wee bit of a tutorial… I didn’t really follow it, but they were a good basis for when I ended up just “winging it.” Haha!

clouds2

{Pinterest}

Yes… These clouds are totally better than mine.  I’ll totally admit it.

The key is just going for it!!!!!  Even if you don’t know what you’re doing and you’re not an artist!  What’s the worst that happens??!!  You merely re-paint over it and try again?!?!?  That’s not so bad!!!

Then I just looked at pictures of lots of real clouds.  Google Images is magic! 🙂

Then… SINK or SWIM…

I went for it!!!

IMG_0630

I hand mixed several colors with the white, blue, and gray I used for the walls.

4 colors are what I ended up with.

White

Lighter Blue (Mixed about 1/2 and 1/2 of the white and the blue)

Lighter Gray  (Mixed about 1/2 and 1/2 of the white and the gray)

and

Blu-ish Gray (Mixed about 1/3 white, 1/3 blue and 1/3 gray)

Then I used those cheap sea sponges.

Yes… I totally forgot to get a picture.  Shame on me.

They are pretty standard though… They’re in the paint department at pretty much any home improvement store…

Craft Store…

Wal-Mart… 😉 lol!

And I grabbed a paper plate.

And just started at it!

IMG_0638

First I did the main shape of the cloud in white…

Then I did the gray shadows…

IMG_0641

Then I started blending along those gray shadows with the Blu-ish/Gray…

IMG_0640

Added some of the blue here and there for depth…

(Okay real-artists… You should leave now.  I’m probably driving you completely out of your miiiiimd! Haha!)

IMG_0642

And then finished blending it with white again.

IMG_0643

TAAA-DAAA!

Okay… Just to Re-interate…

I am NOT an artist!

BUT I tried it!

And it doesn’t look half bad!

And Levi (The little man munchkin that lives in this room now) apparently can’t stop looking at the clouds on the ceiling!  So at the end of the day, I’ll consider that  a smashing success!

So TRY it!  Just TRY it!!!

What’s the worst that could happen?!??!?!

Not Just a Housewife

The most adorable bedding in all the world….

bedding1

{Target}

Okay… Are you with me here???!  This just HAS to be the cutest bedding EVER!

The downside?  I’m cheap and $129.99 is more than I’d spend on bedding for SAM AND I let alone a munchkin that would never know the difference between this or anything else! 🙂 lol!

But drool with me… Take it all in…

The light turquoise sheets with little white polka dots…

The girly yet TOTALLY FUN flowers…

The fantastic colors that would fit in that room puuuuuurrfectly!

And did I mention all the polka dots?  I love polka dots.  A LOT!!! 🙂

Okay…. So now I can get giddy about a GIRL nursery…

AboveCrib1

Ahhhh yes!   A GIRL!

We’re super excited about getting a girly room started….  Like I said, we’re not overly into “pink-inizing” our young munchkin but I do want her room to be fun AND girly!   I mentioned before I loved the thought of lots of this:

GirlNursery4

{Pinterest}

Chinese lanterns… Paper pom-poms… And that garland…

All of it kinda ADORABLE, girly, AND fun!!

Here are some other tutorials of inspiration photos for what I’d like to see above out little LADY’S crib!

AboveCrib1

{Pinterest}

I pinned this for the arrangement above the crib….  But just now, while looking at the picture, I noticed the book nook below the window!  Cuteness!

Note to Self: Do that in the Munchkin’s room!

{Pinterest}

Again with the cuteness!   In other news… Loving that pallet daybed!

AboveCrib3

{Pinterest}

A tutorial on how to make these ridiculously cute flower-looking pom-poms!

AboveCrib4

{Pinterest}

AWESOME way to overhaul some faded paper lanterns… Incidentally, I have a few of those.  I have a feeling I’ll be getting some tissue paper and making some like these! 🙂

AboveCrib5

{Pinterest}

Definitely not opposed to some glitz in there!  Every girl needs a little glitz! 🙂

AboveCrib6

{Pinterest}

This looks like a fairly simple tutorial from Thoughtfully Simple! I could do that!!! 🙂

AboveCrib7

{Pinterest}

How’s this for a FUN different texture??!  Tulle Pom-poms!  Brilliant!

AboveCrib8

{Pinterest}

This one is an awesome Tutorial by “Southern Belle Soul” and it shows how to make each of these orbs.  Mmmm!   I love brilliant people who do tutorials and work out the kinks for me! Can’t wait to try some of these myself!

AboveCrib9{Pinterest}

Again with the brilliance!!!  Cheap upscale!  Awesome!  Great Tutorial by The Idea Room!

AboveCrib10

{Pinterest}

Also a fun different texture!   I like the thought of oversized ones better than smaller ones… But totally could work these in pretty easily! 🙂

Anywho….. That’s what’s running through this pregnant, obviously-nursery-crazed  brain right now… Probably need to get the bedding though before I start with any of these… It’ll be easier to match colors that way! 🙂

I should go look at bedding!  Muaahahahaha!

(Ignore that last part if you’re reading this, honey!)

Of Little Lady Munchkin Nurseries….

GirlNursery2

Ahhhhhh yes…..   Pinterest is filled with nursery ideas for a little lady!

While neither Sam or I would be huge fans of our possible daughter being overly “pink-inized” I’m not opposed to moderate amounts of pink in a little lady’s nursery.  😉

Here are some A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E rooms that make me happy!

GirlNursery1

{Pinterest}

My FAVORITE nursery!  Is this not totally drool-worthy?  I love the chandelier… I love the color combination… That bed ruffle…  The pom-pom trim on the curtains… And I love the chevron rug.  Again… Let me take a few minutes to drool.  😉

GirlNursery2

{Pinterest}

Again with that color combo!   LOVE!!!!

And the little-noticed rug??  THE POLKA DOTS!  Mmmmmm!

Love the pink and white accent wall… the happy colors that are girly but not “pink-inized”… Even the simple and happy wall art.    *love*

GirlNursery3

{Pinterest}

Are you kidding me????   A GLITTER WALL?!?!?!?!

Ummmm yeah?  If it’s a girl, she’s TOTALLY getting a wall of glitter!!! (Apparently it’s a gallon of glue mixed with glitter and when you paint it, the glue dries clear leaving SPARKLE!)

GirlNursery4

{Pinterest}

Totally LURVE the thought of paper pom-poms… chinese lanterns… etc… above the crib. It just kinda makes me happy!  🙂

GirlNursery5

{Pinterest}

Kinda like the curtains around the ceiling… Still trying to decide about the colors.  I don’t immediately LOVE it, but I think it could grow on me.  What do you think??

After ogling all these inspiration pictures I am trying very very hard not to hope for a girl! Haha!!!

Of Little Man Munchkin Nurseries….

BoyNursery1

Boy?  Girl?

I am soooooo anxious to find out!!!

Wanna know the number 1 reason why?

I want to mentally start decorating the nursery.  🙂

Here are some inspiration pics from my Little Man Munchkin Pinterest Boards!

BoyNursery1

{Pinterest}

Okay….  Loooove the paint job on the walls and the unexpected pop of color on the ceiling!  And a jungle theme would be awesome for our little “Lyon!”

BoyNursery2

{Pinterest}

In continuing with the whole jungle theme…  I love the giraffe art.  Adorbs!

BoyNursery3

{Pinterest}

Apparently, if it’s a boy… I have a definite inkling towards jungle!  This rug is awesome.

BoyNursery4

{Pinterest}

Is this color combo not awesome??

If I didn’t want to paint animal print in the whole room, (Maybe just an accent wall?)

this color scheme would be pretty awesome!  Especially since the walls are already that blue color.  Maybe blue walls and orange pops of color?  Wheels are turning! 😉

BoyNursery5

{Pinterest}

Love how classy this room is.  And I kinda love the shelving on each side of the crib!  Ummm… Yeah.  Kinda awesome!

BoyNursery6

{Pinterest}

I know, I know…  Enough with the animals already!!! 🙂

I’m just totally digging the bright, happy colors in this color combo! Mmmmm!

Anyhoo….  Just a few of the ideas scurrying through my brain as I try not to fall in love with either the idea of a boy OR a girl! 🙂 Haha!

Girl inspiration post coming soon!
