How I Design a Space: How I Began

How I Design a Project @ www.DIYinRealLife.com

To start off with… I’ll explain a bit where I’m coming from.  Why I am who I am.

At 16, my dad and mom separated. It was a tough age. Soon I found out that if I had interest in home projects, I would need to do it myself.  I started with painting walls in our house.  Sometimes it was special.  My color choices were far from developed. I was sloppy and it was far from perfect.  What on earth my mom was thinking letting me go, I have no idea!  (That’s the kind of mom I want to be!)  From painting walls to painting furniture to whitewashing a brick fireplace to installing tile to planking a living room ceiling to installing and finishing hardwood floors to remodeling kitchens and whole houses.

Questionable design choices as I was developing my style...

People see where I’m at now, they are impressed. (Or something like that??) What they don’t see are all my failures.  All the things I tried that didn’t work out.  All the mistakes. I STILL make mistakes!!! Like EVERY project!!

So just don’t compare your chapter 1 with my chapter 20. I’ve done a LOT of projects since I was 16.  The more you do, the more comfortable you will be. The more aware of YOUR style you’ll be. The more confident you will be in your designs.  My best advice is just jump in and try it!!! What’s the worst that could happen?

I LOVE being surrounded by beauty.  But I also NEED function.  So if something is simply beautiful, but it makes my life more difficult, I won’t do it.   When something is well organized, pretty, AND super functional – That is when it is “life giving” to me.  Fill your home with things that YOU love… Not things someone else tells you to love.  Make your home life giving – Not life sucking.

Questionable design choices as I was developing my style...

Next I’ll be talking about my house notebook… Yes another notebook.  Yes I have a notebook for everything.  Notebooks are my love language.  😉

How candles are made at Master’s Hand Candle Co…

So in November, you might have noticed I didn’t have a lot of projects to post about… Part of the reason for that was that I was actually gone off and on for a couple weeks.  I was up in Tekamah, NE at my mom’s shop, Master’s Hand Candle Co. & Gift Shop.

What was I doing up there? Why pouring candles, of course!  Since getting married, I don’t spend much time up there anymore… But I do go up every fall to pour.

And I got to thinking… Perhaps all of you would enjoy seeing how that all works!

We have poured up to 15,000 candles in a year before, so it really is quite the project!  Especially since candle pouring “season” is from October-December.  The reason being before October it’s too hot to add more heat with the melter…  After December it’s craaaaaazy cold where I pour!

So long story short, I gotta pour a whole lotta candles in a short amount of time!

This is my melter.  Believe it or not… This is the small one.  I use it for small batches or my “re-pour” batches.  Don’t know what re-pour is?  Hang on… I’ll cover that! 🙂

This is the wax after it has fragrance and color in it.   It’s perfectly clear except for the slight color… And OOOOH-WEEEEE it’s s.t.r.o.n.g!

Here I am in full swing… When I am really going, I can pour 1000+ candles a day!  Every single one is hand poured by yours truly.

These candles are fully cooled.  The black things go on the top and the wicks snap into the middle to keep them taunt while the candles cool and contract.

Christmas Cabernet! Yum!

After the candles cool, you’ll notice the wax sinks down.  Sometimes it even leaves gaping holes down the middle.  This makes a “re-pour” necessary. (I told you I’d get around to that!! 🙂 )

Here are the re-pours where I’m topping off the candles to finish them off and make the perfect candle we know and love.

Little known fact:  That’s often why with cheap candles they’ll smell good when you first start burning them then after a while they just don’t smell as strong.  They heavily scent the re-pour but the main candle hardly has any fragrance in it.  Sneaky sneaky! 😉

And taaa-daaa!  Finished candles! These are the 9 best-selling Christmas fragrances.  You should see the whole shelf of 70+ fragrances!  Better yet… Make your way to Tekamah, NE and see for yourself!! 🙂

Kitchen: How to install cabinet hardware

Okay…. You very well know how I feel about things like thoroughness.  And being exact.  And little things like that.  Yawn.

Give me a big room to paint and I’ll whip through that thing in no time flat.

Want anything done fast but not necessarily perfectly?  I’m totally your girl.

Do you identify with me?  Yes?

Then this tutorial is for you, baby!

Let’s be honest.

There are many times when I can afford to whip through stuff and forget the whole “exactness thing.”

Cabinet hardware?  That’s totally not one of them.

If they are even a little off, you can tooooootally tell.

Drives. Me. Crazy.

So… I realized that I mentioned getting these in, but I never did a follow-up post on installing them!

Check out my previous post on D. Lawless and what I think of them….

(hint:  They have awesome quality and super price effective pulls and knobs.  I’ve ordered from them several times and highly recommend them.)

When Handsome Man installed these, he had the brilliant idea of using the photocopier to make a template.

He just measured where he wanted the hardware…

Put the aforementioned hardware on the photocopier with the correct position…

And wah-LAH!  Simple template for drilling the holes!

He just drilled right through the paper.  It got torn up a bit by the end, but totally worked anyway.

Brilliant baby, brilliant.

(Not sure if this was his original idea or a hack?  He does have a Pinterest account he checks every once in a while to see what I’m pinning.  Sweet isn’t he??!  Either way, he’s brilliant.)

Did you know that if your cabinet hardware screws are too long, you can trim them using one of these electrical plier things??

This is something I TOTALLY never knew…   Please tell me I’m not the only one!

Thread the screw in to the appropriate length…

Squeeze the living daylights outta the thing…

And boom.

It’s the right length!

Word to the wise:  Do NOT screw it in backwards.

And don’t ask me how I know.

 I just know.

Leaving it at that.
