Dresser Makeover

I wish I had a before picture of this dresser.

Dresser Makeover by www. DIYinRealLife.com

We pulled the dirty white dresser off the side of the street… Handsome Man fixed the drawers… And I painted the body gray and the drawers white.

We had it in our living room for over a year…  Then finally the time came… I wanted to do something else with the space. So predictable, right? 😉

So we listed it on a local Facebook Craigslist-type group… And boom.  Sold it for $60.00!

Pretty good deal!

New Year Goals: Free Printables

Tips on creating a Home Improvement to-do list for the new year! How www.DIYinRealLife.com plans on keeping motivation on track to finish the odds and ends!

So this morning I worked on a list of goals for the house this year.  We have most of the “big” projects done here on our little previously-forclosured home, but sometimes it’s a little too easy to skip the little odds and ends.

You know…. The little trim here… The caulking there… Things that really don’t take that long, but over the weekend we could take an hour or two to complete.

Here’s what I came up with:

Tips on creating a Home Improvement to-do list for the new year! How www.DIYinRealLife.com plans on keeping motivation on track to finish the odds and ends!

Obviously there are things I’ll want to add to this list as the year progresses, but this was the list I came up with for now.

Then I split those projects up by month.

I put the more important things in earlier months…

Outdoor things in the Spring/Summer…

And left the later months open as I add more things to the list.

I made it super attainable and didn’t go overboard.  You’ll notice the winter months have more projects… That’s because we have a wee bit more time in January than July since Handsome Man is a roofer! 🙂

I also color coded the to-do list.

RED=Handsome Man

BLUE=Me

PURPLE=Either/Both

I thought I was exceptionally witty due to the fact that together red and blue make purple…

But maybe that’s just because the munchkin has decided to forgo sleeping at night lately and I’m merely sleep deprived.

That’s quite possible.

ANYWAY! Handsome Man and I really do best with lists and deadlines so I think this will be super helpful!!

If you are a deadline operator like us, I made a couple free printables just for you!

Go crazy and get some goals organized!!

Q & A: Question about Paint Color?

A while back, I was asked a popular question by “Melanie….”  I replied to her question in the comments, but I thought I’d post about it here, too!

She commented in relation to the Cheap 80′s Light Fixture to Restoration Hardware Knock-Off…

80's Brass Light Fixture to Restoration Hardware Knock-Off - DIY in Real Life.com

Q: “Looks great! I just found the same light at a thrift store. I’m trying it with brushed nickel spray paint, but I think the nickle spray paint is coming out cheesy looking. Can you tell me what color paint is on the walls in that room. I really like it.”

A DIY Coffee Bar by www.DIYinRealLife.com

A: “Melanie!
You might try painting it black first, then painting it again with the nickel paint. It might cover better? Just a thought anyway!!!

As to the color in the dining room… I actually got a whole bunch of free paint and so I mixed 5 or 6 various partial gallons of red paint, crossed my fingers, held my breath and painted it. And it is the PERFECT red, which is awesome because reds are notoriously kinda hard to get! So… I wish I could tell you what this perfect color is, but sadly I can’t.

That’s actually how I’ve done most of the house. I think I’ve bought a gallon of black paint, 2 gallons of semi-gloss white for trim, and a gallon of primer for this entire house since we bought it. Everything else we got from a place in Omaha called “Under the Sink.” Everyone takes their unused paint there and then you can go and pick out whatever paint you want. Mixing paint works well for me because I’m not really the type to buy 10 different sample sizes of paint to see EXACTLY what shade of gray I want. I’m more of a mix this and that and see what we end up with kind of girl. Knowing the color wheel and what happens when you add this color to that color helps too. And since it’s free, if it doesn’t work out, I haven’t lost anything! It works out really well for us! And did I mention, we’ve painted the entire interior of our 3 bedroom house for almost free? Can’t beat free. 😉

I guess I figure, it’s just paint… What’s the worst that can happen?? :)”

Painting Pillows??

I had someone ask about my striped pillows that you kinda saw in the background of this post.

How to Paint Pillows - by www.DIYinRealLife.com

They’re actually painted!  Spray painted that is….

How to Paint Pillows - by www.DIYinRealLife.com

First I cut the squares of fabric the size I needed to make the pillows…

Then I taped off random stripes with painter’s tape…

Then I spray painted them with this paint…

Then I removed the tape and sewed them into pillows.  I used this tutorial by Chalkboard Blue.  Super simple!

Now that I have the stencil, I kinda wanna make chevron ones! 🙂

Easy DIY Numbered Pallet Bench

Easy DIY Numbered Pallet Bench by DIYinRealLife.com

The DIY I’m going to concentrate on in this post is the numbered top on this awesome bench!

Why?

Even though I did build the bench myself out of pallets…

Even though I do love it a lot…

And even though I am proud of the end result…

The step-by-step process of building it is appalling.  LOL!

I don’t think I measured much of anything…

totally eyeballed as much as I could…

Few screws here…. Few screws there….  Eh!  Looks good!!!  🙂

Oh!  And I built this before I was blogging.  And didn’t take pictures!  That’s a good excuse!   Just forget I said anything!!!

can’t blog step-by-step DIY on building the pallet bench because I neglected to take pictures!!! Haha!!  That totally sounds better, right?!?!

Really though…. It was SUPER easy to build.  It took 2 pallets, some 1×4’s that I had on hand for the base underneath, and some random 2x’s I had in the basement for the top.  Suuuuuuper easy and FREE for me since I had everything on hand!  Yippee!

After I painted 1 coat primer, and 2 coats of a semi-gloss latex paint, it looked really pretty good!  But I had something even better in mind!

pinterest1

{Pinterest}

I was inspired by this piece from Sisters of the Wild West.  And they were inspired by a Pottery Barn wall piece.  Dont’cha love how inspiration works?!?!?

Easy DIY Numbered Pallet Bench by DIYinRealLife.com I simply printed a document of the numbers 1-9 in like 5 different fonts in various sizes.  Typically one number per page.  This is simply going to be a matter of preference.  Then I spent the next couple hours watching “Psych” and cutting out numbers.  Yeah.  It was awesome.  😉

After they were all cut out, I randomly arranged and re-arranged the numbers in various directions all over the top till it was completely covered.  Absolutely no method to the madness, just in case you’re wondering!!! 😉

I taped them down and then put various weights around the edges of the numbers to get a crisper line.  I wasn’t too worried about getting a super crisp line since I would be distressing it a bit.   If you were really particular about it, you could do this in vinyl too I suppose?

Next step: Have a Handsome Man spray paint the top for you.  I mean, you could do it yourself, but as for me…. I let him spray paint whenever possible!  It’s one of his secret talents! 😉

Again…. I wasn’t too worried about getting a super crisp line since I would be distressing the top later.

Easy DIY Numbered Pallet Bench by DIYinRealLife.com

Hello happy numbers!  🙂

Easy DIY Numbered Pallet Bench by DIYinRealLife.com

This is right after the numbers were painted.

It was at this point, Handsome Man calmly stated, “it looks like something from a horror movie.”

“It looks like WHAT?!?!?”  I said.

“You know… it looks like something from that movie…. Oh what’s it called?  It’s about a guy who deciphers codes and stuff?”

“A Beautiful Mind???”

“Yeah.  That’s it.”

Because “horror movie” is exactly the genre I put “A Beautiful Mind” in.

Granted I wasn’t a big fan of the whole story line…  Can’t say it was my best use of 2 hours.

Man deciphers codes for the government until the end when you find out he’s not deciphering anything for the government after all.  He’s just schizophrenic.

Anyway!  I decided that maybe if there wasn’t quite so much contrast between the gray numbers and the white top, it wouldn’t look so “HORROR MOVIE-ISH!”

So out came the glaze.  I just used whatever I had on hand.  It was a clear glaze that you use sponge painting walls, etc. mixed with some gray paint.

LOVING the finished product and Handsome Man doesn’t even seem to mind the numbers now!!  (Not that he’ll admit, anyway! lol!)

Need to get big baskets, etc. to style the bottom…  But I love the space down there!!
