Coffee Bar….

Yes.  This looks familiar.

Coffee Bar @ DIYinRealLife.com

I just loved it so much in My Favorite Emily’s house…

BeforeAfterB

that I made it in our old house…

DIY in Real Life: Coffee Bar Before & After

then made it again in the new house!

So is it a lack of creativity or just a matter of I know what I like??! Ha!

Coffee Bar @ DIYinRealLife.com

Actually the buffet fits here even better than the old house! Yay for that!!

Fun fact: This buffet belonged to Handsome Man’s great grandpa and grandma!  I love love love this piece! I was unable to refinish the sides due to the veneer being too thin too sand and not being in the best shape. So I opted to paint the sides
gray and refinished the wood top. Love!

Coffee Bar @ DIYinRealLife.com

This is a super functional area that I use every. single. day!  (I mean COFFEE, right??)

The extra open storage for dishes is nice since we don’t have a whole lot of cupboards. (We do have the pantry and that’s a ton of storage too!)

Coffee Bar @ DIYinRealLife.com

And the cups all hanging where I can get em super easy makes me happy.

It’s no wonder this is the second thing I’m featuring in my posts of the things in my kitchen that make me happy.happy.happy!

Coffee Bar @ DIYinRealLife.com

I love taking all my ugly store-bought containers and dumping the contents into clear glass  containers and slapping chalkboard labels onto them! 🙂

And this lady insisted on getting her picture taken.  And with that cheesy smile, how do you resist??

Trunk Overhaul!

So I had this trunk… This cool, old, ratty looking trunk.  It was awesome.

Trunk Overhaul at www.DIYinRealLife.com

Yes this trunk.

And in true Nicole fashion… I forgot to take a good before picture.  This was the only rather old picture I had of it.

Anyway… It was a little dark colored, but I really loved the natural patina. (Anyone else feel extra sophisticated saying those last two words together? No? Just me?)
I was happy to leave the trunk exactly as-is.

That is until the munchkin came along.  When they say, “kids change everything” they aren’t joking.  Even little things like trunks.

So when Emma first started scooting, she decided that for whatever reason, she liked the taste of the slightly deteriorated burlap type fabric on the outside of the trunk.

That awesome patina I once thought the trunk had became nasty-gross-stuff-I-was-constantly-fishing-out-of-my-child’s-mouth.

The trunk was no longer a source of delight.

My slightly mobile child was drawn to it like a moth to a bug zapper.

Like a flea to a hound dog.

Like a cockroach to a…. I’m just gonna stop.

We’ve been cleaning out two of the rentals where we had some bad tenants.  I obviously have bugs on the brain. Ew.

Anyway, I digress.

I decided I needed to do SOMETHING about the trunk in order to save my daughter from herself.

Trunk Overhaul at www.DIYinRealLife.com

First I ran some vaseline along the edges of the wood strips with the tips of my fingers.  Then I painted all of it (burlap material and all) with a light turquoise color I had.

Trunk Overhaul at www.DIYinRealLife.com

Then I glazed it with the same stuff I used on this table.  Which was awesome because it showed off all the texture and gave made that turquoise a tad less bright.  It deepened it to an awesome color!

Trunk Overhaul at www.DIYinRealLife.com

After adding industrial looking casters on the bottom, it makes a PERFECT side table in the living room that I keep chock full of games!

I love it SOOO much now!

Isn’t it awesome how sometimes circumstances force you to change something you loved only to find out you LOVE it even MORE afterwards??

SCORE!!!! 🙂

DIY Chevron Sign

DIY Chevron and Wire LOVE Sign by www.DIYinRealLife.com

You might remember my chevron spree a few weeks back…

I chevron-ed this table…

This pinboard…

A few other things…

and… *drumroll*

Some chevron signs.

DIY Chevron and Wire LOVE Sign by www.DIYinRealLife.com

First I stained and painted the various boards…

Then… Using my stencil from Cutting Edge, I used my foam roller and rolled away.

http://www.cuttingedgestencils.com/chevron-stencil-pattern.html

Then I grabbed my wire and needle nose pliers…

DIY Chevron and Wire LOVE Sign by www.DIYinRealLife.com

Then I drilled a few holes to attach my wire words…

And Wahhh-lah!

DIY Chevron and Wire LOVE Sign by www.DIYinRealLife.com

I made them to take up to the shop.

Let’s just say I fell in love with them and kept one of course!

The rest I delivered up to Tekamah… We’ll see how long they stick around. 😉

DIY Chevron Burlap Ribbon

DIY Burlap Chevron Ribbon by www.DIYinRealLife.com

Okay… I dig chevron.  I just do.  I’m not ashamed!

And when I saw this inspiration…  “Burlap? Chevron? Ribbon? Love.”

Pinterest Inspiration

{Pinterest}

I happen to love the cotton in this wreath by Orthodox Mom.  Super cute!!!!

I love the chevron ribbon but…

I’m cheap.

And I didn’t want to buy any.

So I thought to myself:

Self… You bought ribbon on a garage sale this summer.  Burlap ribbon from Ballard Designs no less. It was only 1.00 a roll and you got three, you shrewd-efficient-deal-finding girl you!”

DIY Burlap Chevron Ribbon by www.DIYinRealLife.com

Yes I did.  Full rolls of Ballard Designs ribbon for 1.00 each.

I hadn’t done anything with them yet, so I pulled one out one evening along with a black sharpie marker.  I flipped on the TV, plopped down on the couch and started working away at it.

DIY Burlap Chevron Ribbon by www.DIYinRealLife.com

Yes it’s time consuming… But it’s a good while-you-watch-a-movie project!  Really doesn’t take much for brains! 😉

DIY Burlap Chevron Ribbon by www.DIYinRealLife.com

I was anything but exact with the pattern because I wanted it slightly irregular and imperfect.

 I basically just outlined 2 M’s then colored it in… Or W’s if your prefer… 🙂

It would take a lot longer if you wanted them exact though, and had to measure I’m sure. I’d suggest just buying it if that’s the case.  Ha!

I sure love it though!  Can’t wait to find something to use it on now that I have a whole roll of it!

I’ll post when I do!  Whoop whoop!

Christmas 2013: This year’s tree

Again with the tree, I mixed glitzy and simple…

Christmastime at www.DIYinRealLife.com

I especially adore these new “sunburst mirror” ornaments.  So delicate and glitzy!

Christmastime at www.DIYinRealLife.com

I also wrapped a bunch of white twinkle lights in the deco mesh.

{Amazon}

Kinda like this stuff.  I used copper, gold, and silver mesh for the mixed metal look.

Adorable Christmas Wrap by www.DIYinRealLife.com

The presents are stacking up under the tree as I surprisingly wrap presents early!  🙂

I also love this adorable fluffy little guy!

He makes me smile! 🙂

I also wrapped the artwork that’s usually up there like the rest of my presents under the tree using kraft paper and red/white baker’s twine.

Kinda of a fun different look.

Also continuing the glitzy meets simple! 😉

Also.  This munchkin can’t get enough of the tree.

Adorbs.

Christmas 2013: Window Wreaths

So this year, I kinda went glitzy meets simple.  Mixing sparkly and burlap ribbon was kinda how I rolled this time.

Christmastime at www.DIYinRealLife.com

I put all these wreaths on every window downstairs.

Christmastime at www.DIYinRealLife.com

It’s kinda nice, because I can pull the curtains open and closed behind the wreath.

Christmastime at www.DIYinRealLife.com

I didn’t even hot glue anything.  Just stuck the poinsettia stems, burlap, and glittery leaves in and wrapped the wreath stems around them.  Super easy to do something different next year! 🙂

Christmas 2013: Staircase Decorating!

One of my favorite places to decorate in our home is the staircase.  I love, love, love it!  This year I went super simple…

Christmastime at www.DIYinRealLife.com

I used a couple nice thick mixed garlands I got 75% off at Hobby Lobby 2 years ago and wrapped them with some cheap $9.99 garlands for extra oomph.  Then I wrapped some white twinkle lights…

Christmastime at www.DIYinRealLife.com

Add l.o.t.s. of great crystal prisms, ornaments, etc…

Christmastime at www.DIYinRealLife.com

I love how the glass crystals reflect all the twinkle lights…

Christmas is just too much fun!! 🙂

And decorating for it is my favorite!
