Kitchen: Demo

As I was going back through old pictures, I realized I hadn’t shown you all the process that brought our kitchen from abandoned-forclosure-house to what we know and love as home.

It was in really rough shape…  The fact that all the pipes in the house had frozen in burst meant that we had to totally gut the bathroom and kitchen.  While we knew we were in for a lot of work, it turned out so much better than if they hadn’t caused such a mess!  It forced us to start from scratch and we got the house for a great deal because of it!  Yay for good deals – especially ones that become your home!  🙂

First things first – The demo part of things!  Who knew a hoe would be the tool of choice whilst ripping out dorky square ceiling tiles??

Imagine my excitement when Handsome Man found a fantastic brick chimney behind all that lathe and plaster!!!

A Kitchen remodel at www.DIYinRealLife.com

You’ll notice I’m excitedly ripping out the lathe and plaster…. Shortly after this I’m pretty sure I was kissing the chimney.  I love exposed brick.  It’s as simple as that.

Amazing how much junk and mess one gets into when ripping into lathe and plaster.  Seriously.

Can’t wait to show you what the previous layout looked like and how we totally changed our kitchen!  (AKA: Which walls came down! 🙂  )

Refinishing the kitchen wood floors…

Another project that when I say “we,”  I actually mean mostly Handsome Man.

So yeah… “we” refinished the kitchen floor finally!

Naaaaaasty!   We totally wanted to get this done before this munchkin started crawling!

And judging by her current level of desire to not stay in one place for very long, I have a feeling she’ll be an early crawler! 😉

We initially thought this white stuff was simply paint and could easily be sanded off.

Handsome Man thought it was some kind of leveling stuff.  Apparently it was wicked stuff to remove.

Close!

But since this is DIY in Real Life, gotta show you what the rest of my main floor looked like.

Amazing how when you work on one spot, the rest toooooootally goes to pot!  Ha!

Finally!

House #7!

While not as impressive as the other homes, it was still pretty fantastic!

Omaha Street of Dreams 2013 Tour – House #7

Although it was still too dark to take a picture, the fountain in the entryway was very impressive…

The kitchen/dining area had a definite tuscan flair to it.

My favorite line from Handsome Man came when he saw the missing door.

“I’m really not sure this bathroom delivers the sort of privacy I’d want.”

😉

I’d heard “prep kitchens” were all the rage now.  Basically a prep kitchen is another kitchen off the kitchen where you can leave your toaster/coffee maker/etc… out and everyone thinks you’re amazing because your real kitchen looks so clean!  Ha!

All the other houses had enormous pantries, but this was the only house that actually had a prep kitchen.

Excited to share all the projects we’ve been working on here!! Whoop whoop!!!

PINS of the Week10-19-

{Pinterest}

Anyone else think these are so simply adorable for fall??!  Yes!  Awesome tutorial by Hello Lidy!

PINS of the Week10-19-2

{Pinterest}

What an awesome way to involve kids and help them learn to set the table correctly!

PINS of the Week10-19-3

{Pinterest}

Speaking of involving the kids with chores…  I think this idea is a great trick for kids! Write directions on the front of the basket and let them choose which task they want to do.

This seems like a pretty awesome idea and a subject on my mind as Handsome Man and I just finished reading our first child-training book.  It’s a Love and Logic book.  Intriguing.  We do have some time before we cross this bridge with Emma, but we’re trying to get a head start!

PINS of the Week10-19-pic

{Amazon}

In short, one of the general ideas is to set perimeters, but offer choices within those perimeters.  For instance with this Pinterest idea, “It’s time to clean the house!  Would you like to choose the bathroom basket or the dusting basket?”  So basically, you are telling them it’s time to clean but offering them a choice as to what they would like to clean.

This idea is somewhat unnatural to me as I tend towards more of a clean-the-bathroom-right-now-because-I-said-so-mom.  I don’t want to be that way though, so I love some of the ideas in this book.  Granted, I hate the concept of having a “blueprint for raising the perfect child” idea because every child is so very different and what works for one totally doesn’t work for the next.  While I don’t agree with everything in the book, this concept does have a lot of ideas that I totally want to implement!

 I don’t like the COMMAND-MOM-do-it-right-now-because-I-said-so extreme

or the

HELICOPTER-MOM-it’s-okay-honey-I-want-you-to-always-be-happy-and-get-whatever-you-want extreme.

I do like how Love and Logic seems to be in the happy middle.

ANYWAY!!!!   RABBIT TRAIL! 🙂  lol!

It’s just on my mind right now because we just finished the book!

BACK to my Pinterest faves!

Apparently this is the “rich neighborhood” version of SPEED BUMP.  lol!

 Horrid cel phone pic!  Sorry!

Unfortunately the only one I got of the exterior.  Which is sad, because it was really very cool!

It reminded me of a tuscan-type home.

All the showers on the tours were fantastic!  My favorite quote from Grace came after she tiptoed into one of the first showers and said in the most matter-of-fact voice, “Someone just recently showered.”

It was just such an odd thing to say.  😉

But that’s Grace.  And that’s why we love her!

Street of Dreams Tour - House #6

There were one of these sinks on each side of the shower.

Street of Dreams Tour - House #6

 That’s because it does!!!!

Go Anna!!!

Street of Dreams Tour - House #6

They even had a secret room!  Ooooooh!  I couldn’t get a pic of it with the bookshelf/door open though.  People were FASCINATED with it…  It was crowded inside and they kept opening and shutting it, ooohing and ahhhhing.  Funny!

Street of Dreams Tour - House #6

Interesting ceiling in the girls room… Hadn’t seen one like that before!

Street of Dreams Tour - House #6

Don’t know that I would have picked lavender walls with the rest of the color scheme, but….

Street of Dreams Tour - House #6

Pretty tile!

Street of Dreams Tour - House #6

The boy’s super hero room was pretty sweet!

Street of Dreams Tour - House #6

 Comic pages wall…

Very cool house overall! 🙂

Omaha Street of Dreams 2013 Tour – House #5

Excuse my absence the last few days…  Had a hard time keeping up with my usual every other day posting goal! Eep!

I’ll be posting later on as to why I’ve missed the last couple days…  Commented guesses are welcomed! 😉  Ha!

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5

The exterior of House #5 was totally my favorite!!

It almost looked like a house that belonged at the beach!

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5

And while I would never want to live anywhere but Nebraska, the beach is my favorite place to visit!

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5

And for some reason “give me two pina coladas” is totally playing in my head right now.  It’s all the beach talk.

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5They had an impressive home office right by the entryway.  I think if I had a home office in a house like this, right out front is where I’d want it.  🙂

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5

I loooooved this piece of furniture!  Distressed to perfection!

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5

Me with the light fixture obsession, I know! 😉

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5

Again.  Unique light fixture caught my eye!

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5

All these mudrooms in the back entryways from the garage are fantastic!  Love this cream one.

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5

The stone fireplace was stunning.

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5

This little girls room was adorable!  The light pink walls were so pretty and delicate. (And I’m not even that big of fan of pink!)  The ceiling had the softest looking clouds.  And the light fixture was so unique and whimsy.

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5

Adorableness!

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5This bedroom was happy.  I love me some turquoise.

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5

It was an interesting twist to a typical canopy bed.

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5

We all immediately laughed when we went downstairs.

Because everyone needs 3 tv’s to catch all the games! 😉

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5

I had never seen a paint job like this before!  Observe the painted stripes on the wall…

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5

Do you see the curtains?

Yes… The stripes align with the wall/curtain!  Ha!

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5

Lovely bar area!

Street of Dreams Tour - House #5

Fantastic for entertaining!

Overall….  LOVED the exterior in this house…

Not a big fan of a lot of the style inside as a whole, but it was a beautiful house!

Pins of the Week…

It’s the weekend again!  Time for my favorite pins this week!
